My indulgence into geeky books and movies continues. Today I got started with “I, Robot”. I’ve read the first couple of stories, and it feels like a breath of fresh intellectual gratification. The second story, “Runaway” talked about the equilibrium caused due to conflict between different laws of robotics. Again, the first thing that came to my mind while reading the story was – this situation feels exactly like a computer program. Fictional stories are awesome when the concept behind those are vaguely related to scientific or mathematical themes.

It will be interesting to see how the Robot series relates with the Foundation series. I’ve already read the first of the Foundation novels. I will probably read the entire Robot series before moving on to the other Foundation novels.

I finally ordered an electric guitar. After months of researching, I will be finally getting an Epiphone Les Paul Special II. She’s a beauty, the perfect combination of looks, affordability, playability and most of all, suits my style of music. Being unable to get the color I was looking for (black) at the guitar shop, I ordered it online. The closest guitar I could even think of buying, which equalled it in all qualities was an ESP LTD EC-50, and it cost Rs 5000 more.

It felt really awesome trying it out at the shop. I was just trying out some simple power chords, but the thing which was so noticeable about the experience was that the slightest of motions of my picking hand caused such a loud noise. You feel as if you have so much power in your hands, when playing an electric.

The amp I ordered was a Laney LX12. It’s a 10 watt solid state amp, pretty good for bedroom jamming.

I’ll wait for it to come, and post some pics.

I saw the first two Matrix movies today. While I had seen bits and pieces of it during my teen years, I wanted to see this masterpiece from start to finish once. The story itself is quiet extraordinary, specially for a computer geek. Imagine being able to write a computer program to simulate human behaviour.

In my opinion, the movie would be quiet interesting to programmers, who will experience a sense of emotional attachment to some of the quotes in the movie. For example, how everyone from the Oracle to the Architect is referred to as a computer program. Of course, none of the technical details of programming are expected in an entertainment focused movie, but these little references make the movie very enjoyable to someone who’s ever written code.

The references to mathematics and equations helped too. Some might think of them as being too lame, as in, there not being a direct connection between what was being said and the actual situation, but I think the slightest of relations being inferred, however vague those relations might be, are actually quiet simulating to a geek.

Of course, all the action sequences are very enjoyable as well, however, I felt there were a little too much of those in the second movie.

I am yet to see the third one. Much of the enthusiasm has ebbed away though, after seeing the IMDB rating of the third one, but I guess I’ll watch it and judge on my own.
